چکیده

We investigate the behavior of a system composed of two small identical water droplets loaded with an activator-inhibitor system possessing only a single stable steady state and coupled through a third, ‘‘signaling’’ species able to diffuse through the interdroplet medium. Depending on whether the third species is coupled to the activator or the inhibitor, the system can exhibit wave instability, which is equivalent to out-of-phase oscillations, or Turing instability, which is equivalent to the birth of two new stationary steady states. For a large interdroplet gap, equivalent to a large time delay, droplets can undergo synchronous, in-phase oscillations. Our analysis can be extended to a system of many coupled in-line droplets, as we illustrate. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1606677#

Pattern formation and spatial self-entrainment in bistable chemical systems.

We describe the formation of spatial structures generated by diffusive instabilities in bistable systems. The coupling between the different spatial modes emanating from the two homogeneous steady states can then give rise to self-parametric instabilities favoring the occurrence of resonant rhombic or quasiperiodic structures such as superlattices or quasicrystalline patterns.

Magneto-Rotational Transport in the Early Sun

Angular momentum transport must have occurred in the Sun’s radiative zone to explain its current solid body rotation. We survey the stability of the early Sun’s radiative zone with respect to diffusive rotational instabilities, for a variety of plausible past configurations. We find that the (faster rotating) early Sun was prone to rotational instabilities even if only weak levels of radial dif...

Convective Instability Induced by Nonlocality in Nonlinear Diffusive Systems

0031-9007= We consider a large class of nonlinear diffusive systems with nonlocal coupling. By using a nonperturbative analytical approach we are able to determine the convective and absolute instabilities of all the uniform states of these systems. We find a huge window of convective instability that should provide a great opportunity to study experimentally and theoretically noise sustained p...

THEORY, EXPERIMENT AND PRACTICE OF SLAG ATTACK OF REFRACTORIES

Penetration and dissolution mechanisms are reviewed for predominantly single-phase oxide, two phase oxide and oxide-carbon composite refractories by liquid silicate slags. Theoretical models of these processes, as well as static (sessile drop, dipping and crucible) and dynamic (rotating finger and rotary slag) experimental tests, along with their practical limitations are considered. Direct (co...

Research on Cellular Instabilities of Lean Premixed Syngas Flames under Various Hydrogen Fractions Using a Constant Volume Vessel

An experimental study of the intrinsic instabilities of H2/CO lean (φ = 0.4 to φ = 1.0) premixed flames at different hydrogen fractions ranging from 0% to 100% at elevated pressure and room temperature was performed in a constant volume vessel using a Schlieren system. The unstretched laminar burning velocities were compared with data from the previous literature and simulated results. The resu...
